I cannot seem to find anywhere in the Bible where Jesus said…. “Feel free to hold on to unforgiveness and bitterness towards those who have hurt you” or “go forth and hurt those who have hurt you” or “shun those that have sinned against you.” I know it sounds funny and a bit laughable, but odds are you probably wished that was the actual scripture at some point in your life. You quite possibly have even lived like the scripture was written that way. I know I have been guilty!

You never look more like Jesus than when you forgive someone that has done you wrong. There is a powerful and spiritual exchange when you choose to let go of things you have every earthly right to cling to.

This is what I call the “Trinity of Forgiveness” that we all have, will, or are struggling with…

Forgiving others

People have done wrong to each other and have been wronged since the beginning of time and that will never change. It is an unfortunate reality of life, even in the church. We don’t like to admit it, but we have been the ones doing the wrong, maybe just as much as we have been wronged ourselves. Be quick to forgive and be quick to be receive forgiveness. “And when you pray, make sure you forgive the faults of others so that your Father in heaven will also forgive you. But if you withhold forgiveness from others, your Father withholds forgiveness from you.” Matthew 6:14-15 (The Passion Translation)

Forgiving yourself

There will undoubtedly be times where we fall and make mistakes. It will happen, we are human. The enemy knows your weaknesses and would love to keep you down and in bondage by the mistakes you have made, but it doesn’t have to be that way . The same power that conquered the grave is the same power that lives in you. Because of Christ, you are not a slave to your mistakes. You have been forgiven…. ask for forgiveness, get up, and walk in freedom.

Forgiving God

Newsflash…. you will NEVER have a reason to hold unforgiveness towards God. He has never wronged you and never will. God has never brought destruction to your life. God is not the cause of your inability to control yourself. God is not the cause of your failures. God has never had a plan to hurt you. God is good! All good things come from above! God is love!
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
Jeremiah 29:11 (English Standard Version)

You never look more like Jesus than when you forgive someone that has done you wrong. There is a powerful and spiritual exchange when you choose to let go of things you have every earthly right to cling to.

No other human was mistreated or wronged more than Jesus was. No one was more humiliated in public than Jesus.

Let go, free others, and free yourself by forgiving!
